Our Journey Through Adversity — and Recovery

The Earthquake

On September 8, 2023, a devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, forever changing our community. With its epicenter near Amizmiz, not far from our valley, the earthquake sent powerful tremors across the region from Marrakech to the High Atlas Mountains.

Our Homestay’s Status

Our cherished Berber Homestay, which has welcomed guests from around the world to experience authentic Atlas Mountain life, was significantly damaged in the earthquake. The traditional building techniques that gave our home its unique character unfortunately couldn’t withstand the powerful tremors.

Current situation:

  • ✓ Our homestay has been fully rebuilt
  • ✓ We reopened in December 2025
  • ✓ We are now welcoming guests again

After more than two years of reconstruction, we are proud to open our doors once more. Our home has been rebuilt with love — honoring traditional Berber design while incorporating modern earthquake-resistant techniques.

The Broader Impact on Our Region

The September 2023 earthquake was one of the most devastating natural disasters in Morocco’s recent history:

  • Over 2,900 people lost their lives
  • Thousands more were injured
  • Countless families lost their homes, especially in remote mountain villages
  • Traditional mud-brick structures were particularly vulnerable
  • Many historical buildings and community centers were destroyed

Our village, like many in the High Atlas region, faced immense challenges in the aftermath. Remote locations and damaged infrastructure made rescue and relief efforts difficult in the days following the disaster.

Our Rebuilding Journey

The path to recovery was challenging but filled with hope:

  1. Emergency response (September–October 2023): The immediate aftermath focused on search and rescue, emergency medical care, and establishing temporary shelters.
  2. Assessment and planning (November 2023–March 2024): Working with local authorities and engineers to assess damage and create rebuilding plans that honor traditional architecture while incorporating earthquake-resistant features.
  3. Active reconstruction (April 2024–November 2025): Thanks to support from the Moroccan government, international aid organizations, and generous donations from past guests and friends, we rebuilt our homestay.
  4. Reopening (December 2025): After more than two years, we opened our doors again and welcomed our first guests back to the valley.
  5. Community rebuilding (ongoing): Beyond our own home, we remain actively involved in community rebuilding efforts, helping to restore homes, schools, and community spaces throughout our valley.

A New Chapter

We are deeply grateful to everyone who supported us through this difficult time — our past guests, friends from around the world, and our incredible community.

The earthquake tested us, but it also showed us the strength of the Berber spirit. Our valley is recovering. Our community is stronger. And our home is ready to welcome you.

When you stay with us now, you’re not just a guest — you’re part of our recovery. Every visit supports local families, guides, cooks, and artisans who are rebuilding their lives.

The essence of Berber Homestay remains unchanged: the warmth, the home-cooked meals, the mountain views, and the family connection. We simply have a stronger roof over our heads.

We look forward to welcoming you.
